What Is Peer Mentoring?

Peer mentoring programs match older youth with Younger people on a one-on-one basis. They support young people to become peer mentors who will provide guidance for other young people. Through this relationship, peer mentors provide support to others and serve as role models for younger people who benefit from additional support.

Challenges facing those being mentored include problems with schoolwork; social issues, such as pressure to drink or smoke; family problems or tension; and other difficulties of growing up.

Peer Mentoring

Peer Mentors support young people who simply feel lonely or uncomfortable in large group situations. These young people may especially benefit from the support, attention, and friendliness of a peer mentor, along with other supports.

Peer mentors can help others with independent travel, confidence building and raising self esteem.

A peer mentor can also simply be someone for a younger person to attend activities with. Giving younger people the chance to mix with others the same age and to try things they may not have had the opportunity to do.

Peer mentors are a good influence for younger people who may need a little extra attention or who don’t have a good support system available to them.

Are you someone with spare time to support and listen to someone around the same age as you?

Can you offer friendly advice on anything from schoolwork to making friends?

You can play that part for younger people in your community.

Matched to someone with similar interests, experiences, or goals, you can provide valuable advice, share experiences, and, most important, serve as a role model for a young person in need of support.

Xplore are looking for young people aged between 14 and 21 who are willing to train as peer mentors. The training will consist of a 20 week training programme , volunteering experience in group settings and on a 1-1 basis. All those who undertake the training will also be given the opportunity to engage in some form of accreditation with the support of Xplore staff and other young people.
